The paring down of side quests and racing and NPCs I can't bother to care about makes the experience purely stealth and combat. The best I can do is that all of the elements were concurrent and towards one goal.
I loved HoD even though it was flawed because it felt a lot more like a coherent game. Sure, it's missing some gameplay mechanics from the main game, but if they hashed out a full length game set in the Vietnam War and found a way to add in the full menu of mechanics, I'm now convinced it would be amazing. I find this sort of "survive with what you can find" setup much more intense and exciting. Eventually I got the silenced pistol and silenced sniper rifle, but for the first part of the game, if I wanted to stay undetected, I needed to use throwing knives and the bow. The weapon progression is great in the sense that you can only upgrade if you find something better than what you're carrying. The tone was much more serious, and I appreciated that. The entire experience lacked the light-hearted goofiness of gameplay in FC5. I felt a real fear of coming across enemies in the jungle.
There isn't much of a story, but as a downed US soldier behind enemy lines trying to escape alive while saving my allies, the stakes feel much higher for me personally than they did in FC5. Vietnam at night is a much more interesting setting to me. I just started the Hours of Darkness DLC last night, and it's everything I wish Far Cry 5 was.
